"After severe storms across Montgomery, Prattville, and Wetumpka, we frequently find hail and wind damage that simply isn't visible from the ground. Homeowners often believe their roof escaped the storm because they don't see missing shingles or active leaks, only to discover severe bruising, broken seal strips, and granule loss during a professional drone inspection."

    Central Alabama Weather Realities

Central Alabama averages roughly 55 thunderstorm days each year. The Montgomery metro area, including Autauga, Elmore, and Lowndes counties, regularly experiences damaging straight-line winds, large hail, and tornado-producing storm systems during our spring and late-fall severe weather seasons. These weather patterns place significantly more stress on roofing systems than homeowners in many other parts of the country experience.

    1. The Storm Ends: Immediate Safety First

When the sirens stop and the severe weather passes, your first instinct is to assess the damage. If you suspect severe damage, you may need emergency roof repairs. However, post-storm environments in Alabama are notoriously dangerous due to downed pine trees, active power lines, and hidden structural hazards.

    Safety Checklist

    • Stay away from downed power lines and standing water.
    • Check all family members and pets.
    • Photograph obvious interior damage if safe to do so.
    • NEVER climb onto a wet, storm-damaged roof yourself.
    • Place buckets under active interior leaks to protect flooring.

    2. The Exterior Walkaround

Once it is completely safe to walk outside, perform a visual inspection from the ground. Insurance adjusters look for collateral damage to confirm a storm event occurred. You should do the same.

    Roof & Gutters

Look for missing shingles, dented gutters, and granules washing out of downspouts.

    Windows & Screens

Check for shattered glass, torn screens, or dented window wraps.

    Siding & Fences

Look for cracks, holes, or splinters in vinyl siding and wooden fences.

    AC Units

Inspect the fins on your outdoor HVAC unit for hail dents.

    3. The Hidden Damage Most Homeowners Miss

This is the most critical part of storm recovery. Just because you don't see missing shingles doesn't mean your roof survived. In fact, the most destructive storm damage is often completely invisible from the ground.

    Hail Damage (Bruising)

Hail doesn't usually tear shingles off. Instead, it crushes them. When a hailstone strikes an asphalt shingle, it knocks away the protective granules and crushes the fiberglass mat underneath. It looks like a small dark spot, but it means water can now slowly seep into your roof decking over the next several months.

    The Hail Size Impact Chart

    • Pea to Marble (¼" - ½") Minimal damage to healthy roofs.
    • Dime to Quarter (¾" - 1") Granule loss; bruises older shingles.
    • Half Dollar (1 ¼") Severe bruising; breaks fiberglass mats.
    • Golf Ball to Tennis Ball (1 ¾"+) Catastrophic damage; punctures possible.

    Wind Damage (Creasing)

Straight-line winds are notorious in Central Alabama. High winds lift the edge of the shingle, breaking the tar seal that holds it down, which often necessitates a complete roof replacement. The shingle flips up, creases, and then lays back down flat. From the ground, it looks normal, but the seal is broken. The next rainstorm will drive water straight up under the shingle.

    The Wind Speed Impact Chart

    • 40-50 MPH Tears off already loose or aging shingles.
    • 50-60 MPH Lifts shingles; breaks adhesive seals.
    • 60-70 MPH Creases architectural shingles; tears off flashing.
    • 70+ MPH Major structural exposure; peels roof sections.

    Hail Damage Visual Identifier

Learn how to spot the subtle signs of hail damage that compromise your roof's integrity.

    Circular Bruising

Dark, soft indentations in the shingle where the fiberglass backing has been fractured by blunt force. Often feels like a bruised apple when pressed.

    Granule Loss

Exposed black asphalt where colored granules were knocked away. Look for excessive granule accumulation in gutters and downspouts after a storm.

    Collateral Damage

Dents on soft metals like roof vents, pipe boots, aluminum fascia, AC fins, and window screens that prove hail fell at the property.

    Exposed Fiberglass Mat

In severe cases, the asphalt is completely shattered, exposing the shiny fiberglass matting underneath. This requires immediate replacement.

Warning: Never climb on a hail-damaged roof. Dislodged granules act like ball bearings and make the surface extremely slippery.

    Cracked Pipe Boots & Flashing

While you are looking at the shingles, the real danger is often the accessories. Proper roof maintenance can help mitigate some of these issues. Hail shatters the rubber gaskets around your plumbing vents (pipe boots). Wind bends and tears the metal flashing around your chimney. These are the #1 causes of immediate post-storm interior leaks.

    4. Emergency Mitigation (Tarping)

Your insurance policy requires you to "mitigate further loss." This means if there is a hole in your roof, you cannot just leave it open while waiting for the adjuster. You must protect the interior.

Crimson Roofing provides emergency tarping services. We document the active leak, secure a heavy-duty tarp over the damaged area, and provide you with the invoice. Insurance companies reimburse the cost of emergency tarping as part of your overall claim. Keep all receipts.

    5. Why You Should Call a Roofer Before Your Insurance

Many homeowners immediately call their insurance agent after a storm. This can be a costly mistake. If you file a claim and the adjuster finds no covered damage, you now have a "zero-pay claim" on your record. Too many of these can flag you as high-risk.

Instead, call a trusted local roofer for a free inspection. At Crimson Roofing, our inspection process includes:

    • Drone Photography: High-resolution imagery of steep or unsafe slopes.
    • Physical Roof Walk: Chalking hail hits and checking wind creases.
    • Moisture Assessment: Checking the attic for active leaks.
    • Documentation: Creating a comprehensive photo report you can hand directly to your insurance company.

6 & 7. Filing the Claim and Meeting the Adjuster

If we find legitimate storm damage during our comprehensive roof inspection, the next step is filing a claim. We guide you through exactly what to say to the claims department.

More importantly, we meet the insurance adjuster on your roof. We are not there to argue; we are there to ensure that every bruised shingle, dented vent, and wind-creased section we found during our inspection is properly documented by the adjuster.

    8. Repair vs. Replacement: The Insurance Battle

Insurance companies are businesses, and their goal is to minimize payouts. Adjusters will frequently attempt to approve a "repair" (replacing just a few damaged shingles) rather than paying for a full roof replacement. But is a repair actually viable?

At Crimson Roofing, we use three distinct tests to prove to the insurance company that a repair will fail and a full replacement is required:

    1. The Brittle Test

To replace a single damaged shingle, a roofer must lift the shingle directly above it to remove the nails. If your roof is older and the shingles have become brittle from Alabama's intense summer heat, lifting that upper shingle will snap it in half. This causes a chain reaction of damage. If the roof fails the brittle test, it cannot be repaired.

    2. Discontinued Materials (ITEL Reports)

Manufacturers discontinue shingle lines and colors constantly. If your specific shingle is no longer made, it is physically impossible to repair the roof with "like kind and quality." We send a sample of your shingle to an independent lab (ITEL) to prove it is discontinued, forcing a full replacement.

    3. Alabama Matching Laws

Even if the shingle isn't discontinued, a brand new shingle will look drastically different than a 10-year-old faded shingle. Alabama regulations require a "reasonably uniform appearance." If a repair leaves your roof looking like a patchwork quilt, it damages your home's resale value, and insurance should cover a full replacement.

    Beware of "Storm Chasers"

Within 24 hours of a major hail storm in Montgomery or Prattville, out-of-state roofing crews will flood the area. They knock on doors, promise free roofs, and pressure you to sign a contract on the spot. Here is how to protect yourself:

    Red Flags (Run Away)

    • × They offer to "pay your deductible" (This is a felony in Alabama).
    • × They have out-of-state license plates on their trucks.
    • × They demand a large cash deposit before materials are delivered.
    • × They use high-pressure, "sign today or else" sales tactics.

    Green Flags (Hire Them)

    • They have a physical, local office address in Central Alabama.
    • They are fully licensed and insured in the state of Alabama.
    • They provide comprehensive photo documentation of the damage.
    • They are willing to meet your insurance adjuster on-site.

    9. Choosing Materials for Recovery

A storm claim is the perfect opportunity to upgrade your roofing system. Because insurance is covering the replacement cost of your current roof, you only pay the retail difference if you decide to upgrade to a higher-tier material.

Many Central Alabama homeowners use this opportunity to upgrade from basic 3-tab shingles to Architectural Shingles, or from standard architectural to Class 4 Impact-Resistant shingles. Class 4 shingles are designed to withstand larger hail strikes, and installing them can often qualify you for a significant discount on your homeowners insurance premiums.

    10. The Replacement Process Timeline

Once materials are selected and the claim is approved, here is exactly what to expect from Crimson Roofing:

    Day 1: Preparation

Materials are delivered. A dumpster is carefully placed on protective wood in your driveway to prevent damage.

    Day 2: Tear-Off

We protect your landscaping, strip the old roof down to the wood decking, and inspect for rotten wood.

    Day 2: Installation

New underlayment, ice & water shield, and shingles are installed according to manufacturer specifications.

    Day 3: Cleanup

We perform a magnetic sweep of your yard to pick up stray nails and conduct a final quality walkthrough.

    11. Preventing Future Storm Damage

While you cannot stop severe weather, you can build a more resilient home. Regular maintenance, proper attic ventilation, and trimming overhanging tree limbs significantly reduce the risk of catastrophic damage during the next Alabama storm season.
