We Understand This Is Stressful
Most homeowners file one or two roof insurance claims in their lifetime. It can feel overwhelming when you're suddenly dealing with adjusters, estimates, deductibles, paperwork, and worrying whether your home is protected. Our goal isn't just to replace your roof—it's to help you understand the process so you can make confident decisions every step of the way.
Why Central Alabama Homes Need Protection
We live in one of the most active severe weather regions in the country. This is why having a roofing partner who understands local storms is critical.
March - May
Hail Season
The peak months for severe, roof-damaging hail in Central Alabama.
60+ mph
Wind Events
Straight-line winds frequently exceed the rating of older 3-tab shingles.
High Risk
Spring Tornadoes
Alabama consistently ranks among the states with the most tornado activity.
1 in 20
Claim Frequency
Insured homes have a property damage claim related to wind or hail each year.
Should You Call a Roofer or Your Insurance Company First?
The biggest mistake homeowners make after a storm is calling their insurance company before knowing if they actually have damage.
Calling Insurance First
Filing a claim when no covered storm damage exists may create an unnecessary claim record. Because every insurance company evaluates claims history differently, we believe it's best to determine whether legitimate storm damage exists before deciding to file a claim.
Calling Crimson Roofing
We perform a free, honest inspection. If you don't have enough damage to justify a claim, we tell you not to file one. If you do have damage, we provide the photos and evidence you need to file with confidence.
What Types of Roof Damage Does Insurance Cover?
Homeowners insurance is designed to cover sudden, accidental damage caused by "Acts of God." It is not a maintenance policy.
Hail Damage
Hail bruises shingles, knocking off protective granules and exposing the fiberglass mat to UV decay.
Wind Damage
Severe winds crease, lift, or completely blow off shingles, breaking the watertight seal.
Fallen Trees
Impact from falling trees or heavy branches causing structural or surface damage to the roof.
Flying Debris
Debris picked up by storm winds that strikes and punctures the roofing system.
What is NOT Covered? (Common Exclusions)
Insurance companies will generally deny claims for damage caused by: Normal wear and tear, old age, poor maintenance, manufacturer defects, or improper installation by a previous contractor.
How the Roof Insurance Claim Process Works
From the initial inspection to the final check, here is exactly what you can expect when working with Crimson Roofing.
Free Roof Inspection
We inspect your roof, take extensive photos, and determine if there is enough legitimate storm damage to justify filing a claim.
Filing the Claim
If damage is found, you call your insurance company to file the claim. We provide you with the date of loss and the specific damages to report.
The Adjuster Meeting
The insurance company sends an adjuster. A Crimson Roofing representative meets them at your home, walks the roof with them, and points out all documented damage.
Estimate Review & Supplementing
You receive the initial insurance estimate. We review it to ensure they didn't miss code upgrades or materials. If they did, we file a 'supplement' to get those items approved.
Project Approval & Scheduling
Once the scope of work is agreed upon, you pay your deductible, select your shingle colors, and we schedule your roof replacement.
Roof Replacement
Our expert crews tear off the old roof, inspect the decking, and install your premium new roofing system, usually in just one day.
Final Inspection & Depreciation
We perform a final walkthrough, ensure the yard is clean, and send the final invoice to your insurance company so they release your final 'depreciation' check.
Decoding Insurance Jargon
Insurance paperwork contains unfamiliar terminology that can be difficult for most homeowners to understand. Here are the terms you actually need to know.
Deductible
The portion of the claim you are legally required to pay out of pocket before insurance covers the rest.
ACV (Actual Cash Value)
The value of your roof today, factoring in age and wear. This is usually the amount of your first insurance check.
RCV (Replacement Cost Value)
The total current cost to completely replace your roof at today's prices. The ultimate goal of the claim.
Recoverable Depreciation
The money held back by insurance (RCV minus ACV). It is released to you once we prove the work is completed.
Supplement
An additional request we send to insurance for missing materials, code upgrades, or price discrepancies not in their initial estimate.
Estimating Software
The same professional software adjusters use to calculate repair costs, ensuring our pricing is always aligned with industry standards.
Why Do Insurance Claims Get Denied?
Receiving a denial letter is frustrating, but understanding why it happens can help prevent it.
- Waiting too long to report the damage (past the 1-year mark).
- The adjuster deemed the damage to be 'wear and tear' or blistering, not hail.
- Lack of sufficient photographic evidence from the contractor.
- Improper installation by a previous roofer caused the failure.
- The damage was pre-existing from before your current policy started.
Denied? We can help. If we find legitimate damage that was overlooked, we can help you request a reinspection or invoke the appraisal process.
The Adjuster Meeting: Why We Attend
When the insurance adjuster visits your home, their job is to assess the damage for the insurance company. We're not there to argue—we're there to ensure documented damage isn't overlooked.
We mark the roof with chalk to highlight every hail hit and wind crease so nothing is missed.
We discuss local Alabama building codes that the out-of-state adjuster might not be aware of.
We provide our photo reports directly to them to speed up the approval process.
Insurance Myth vs. Fact
Don't let misinformation cost you thousands of dollars.
Myth: The insurance company chooses my roofer.
Fact: It is your legal right to choose any licensed contractor you want. You do not have to use their 'preferred vendor.'
Myth: I need to get three estimates.
Fact: You only need one estimate from a trusted contractor who uses Xactimate pricing software.
Myth: I can get a 'free roof' if they cover my deductible.
Fact: Waiving a deductible is insurance fraud in Alabama. You must pay your deductible.
Myth: The adjuster catches everything.
Fact: Adjusters are human and often overworked after storms. They frequently miss code upgrades or hidden damage.
Common Homeowner Mistakes
Waiting Too Long
Most policies have a 1-year limit to file a claim. Waiting allows leaks to form, which may be denied if you neglected the initial damage.
Ignoring Minor Damage
Hail damage is invisible from the ground. Ignoring a storm because you don't see missing shingles is a costly mistake.
Hiring "Storm Chasers"
Out-of-state roofers flood Alabama after storms. They do cheap work and leave town, voiding your labor warranty.
Why Choose Crimson Roofing?
We don't use high-pressure sales tactics. We rely on transparency, communication, and local expertise.
- Local Central Alabama experts (not out-of-state chasers)
- In-house insurance supplementing team
- Comprehensive drone & photo documentation
- Fully licensed, insured, and BBB A- Rated

Questions We Hear Every Week
Honest answers to the questions homeowners ask us at the kitchen table.
"My roof isn't leaking. Why should I file a claim?"
Hail damage doesn't cause immediate leaks. It bruises the shingle, knocking off the granules that protect the asphalt from the sun. Over the next 1-2 years, the sun bakes that exposed spot, it cracks, and then it leaks. By the time the leak shows up inside, your 1-year window to file a storm claim has likely expired, and you're paying out of pocket.
"My insurance company only wants to pay for a repair. What now?"
Insurance companies often try to minimize payouts by suggesting a repair. However, if your roof is older, the shingles may be too brittle to repair. When you lift an old shingle to slide a new one under it, the old one snaps. We perform a "brittle test" and document it. If the roof isn't repairable, we submit that evidence to force a full replacement.
"How do I know if I'm being sold something I don't need?"
You shouldn't have to take our word for it. That's why we use drones and high-resolution cameras. We show you exactly what is on your roof. If it's just a popped nail, we'll tell you to fix it for a couple hundred bucks. We only recommend filing a claim if the photographic evidence clearly shows storm damage that warrants a replacement.
